Saratoga Fishing-Wyoming Report

The amount of fish boated is steadily increasing with two guides turning in 40.  Nymphing is still the best option with natural pine squirrel leaches, eggs with a midge off the end.  Lots of midges on the water some fish feeding on the surface on days with less wind this should increase.  The woolly bugger fishing is picking up and the thin mint is the go to pattern.  Look for days with sun on the water and limited wind for good fishing.  Friday and Saturday are looking pretty dang good and we have a boat available!!

Just another day of amazing fishing here on the Grey Reef!  Not much has changed as far as flies or fishing goes.  As one of our guests said under our Client Testimony section to the right “Mend – Set -Net …over and over and over..”  This is a common practice on the Grey Reef.  We commonly here “this was the best day of fishing we have ever had.”

Upper North Platte River-Saratga, Wyoming

Fishing on the Upper North Platte River near Saratoga is heating up.  Fishing from Treasure Island to the Sangers access points are fishing the best.  There’s no need to rise too early. Wait a bit for the sun to warm up the water.  Some of the “hot runs” where the ones surrounding the warm springs.   As the water temps rise expect the fishing to get even better.  The in town fishermen are hooking big spring fish once again.  27.5 inches is the biggest I know of yet.  Nymphing is the most productive fishing especially before max temperatures.  Look for most of the hook ups to come in slower water at the tail out of the runs.  Top producing flies are Pat’s rubber legs, big hare’s ears and eggs are all working well.  BWO’s have started and you may want to try one on the end of a nymph rig.  Streamer fishing is good too, just make sure to keep your strip speed on the slow side and look to find more fish in the big pools than near the banks.  Happy hooking!!

Grey Reef Fly Fishing Report

The weather today was a little on the frigid side but the fishing was still insane!  Don’t let the Denver Post fool you.  The Flush has stirred up a lot of food and the Trout fishing is insane! Yet another group today that has fished here before and said it was their best day here on the Grey Reef.  Not many fish were landed under 17 inches. The fishing today seemed a bit slower than yesterday and and our guests still estimated over 50 fish to the net and more than that came off.  If these numbers are hard to believe, come fishing with our guides and make it a reality!  Check out our client testimony page to the right.  Remember for the rest of March we are running a riduculous $300 full day special and a $375 special for a full day and 1 nights lodging.

Flies of choice are still natural leeches, eggs, and midges.

Luke,  I’m still re-living the most incredible and by far the best day of fishing on the Reef in the 10 years we have fished it.  March 21st DURING THE FLUSH!!  Easily a 50 plus fish day.  Luke is totally committed to his clients having an enjoyable day on the river and their success regardless of fishing ability.  I have fished with many guides in the area and I will not consider using anyone but Luke and Wyoming Anglers.  Thank you Luke!!  Looking forward to few more trips and steamers in the fall. Gray Reef Flush March 18th 2014

The 2nd day of the flush started early this morning.  The water is recovering well and looking better.   The roads from 487 to Alcova are closed, so the Grey Reef in currently inaccessible.  We have been talking with guests who are fearful of fishing the Grey Reef during the flush because of bad information out there.  As a company we try to shy away from doing trips the first day of the flush because the water gets stirred up and can be dirty.  But usually it fish’s well after that.  Be sure and talk to the professionals who fish the Grey Reef year round before make a decision not to fish here during the Grey Reef flush. Good reports have come back from those who fished yesterday, and we expect the fishing to only get better with each day.

Grey Reef Flush March 17th 2014

The flush started early this morning on the Grey Reef.  The water is recovering surprisingly well and will only continue to look better with each day of flushing. Everything below government bridge is blown out.  Keep in mind that the flush is back to it’s normal flow of 500 cfs by 10am each morning.  Then the fishing is usually good.  It doesn’t take long for the fish to find their places again and continue doing what they do best.

March 15th 2014-Grey Reef Fishing Guides Testimony

Today I am back at the office trying to get my rhythm back. I just spent the past several days with Luke and his guides developing a different rhythm. Cast – Mend – Set -Net …over and over and over. If our measure of success was number of boated fish, we were over achievers. If our measure of success was the fun being together (Family and Friends), beyond measure. My first time using Wyoming Anglers from a suggestion by my best fishing buddy. This is now my preferred outfitter. I will only book with someone else if Wyo Anglers are completely booked which soon will be the case if everyone gets the attention we received. Awesome!

Luke,  I just can’t stop thinking about two of the best days of fly fishing with you and Oliver.  All the way home my buddies kept saying they had an incredible time and it was the finest drift trip they have ever been on.  You are a consummate professional and it is refreshing to be with someone who truly loves his work and enjoys sharing the beauty of this special fishery.  Big rainbows, bountiful wildlife and some of the prettiest high desert scenery anyone can ask for. Your knowledge of the river, fishing techniques and boating skills are truly remarkable.  I still don’t know how you can retie flies, adjust indicators, untie knots and row the drift boat all at the same time!

Kathy and I are looking forward to fishing with you again on our annual trip, see you soon and thanks again for another great memory!

3-10-14-North Platte River Flushing Flow Gray Reef 2014

FYI: In the recent Game & Fish meeting regarding TROUT BEADS they ruled that it is legal to Peg an EGG if your using a fly(i.e. rockworm) 2 inches or less below an egg.

Remember that the Grey Reef flush for the North Platte River is scheduled for March 17-26 unless it postponed again due to more winter weather.  Also remember that the fishing is typically good during the flush.  Usually the first day can cloud the waters a little but even the 1st day has fishable conditions.  After the first day or so it can fish exceptionally well!

**”On March 17, flows in the river below Gray Reef Dam will fluctuate from 500 cfs to 4000 cfs according to the following schedule:

HOURS GRAY REEF FLUSH OUTFLOWS (cfs)
00:01 to 01:00 a.m. 500
01:00 to 03:00 a.m. 2000
03:00 to 07:00 a.m. 4000
07:00 to 08:00 a.m. 3000
08:00 to 09:00 a.m. 2000
09:00 to 10:00 a.m. 1000
10:00 to midnight 500

This schedule will be repeated daily on March 18 through March 26. After completing the flushing flow on March 26, the flows below Gray Reef Dam will return to 500 cfs. The schedule may be modified depending on river ice conditions.

The flushing flows are expected to clean the spawning gravels of fine sediment which has accumulated over the winter. The fluctuations in the river flow will be achieved without loss of power generation and the water released from Alcova Reservoir will be restored downstream in Glendo Reservoir.”

****The above info. in bold letters is quoted from the Bureau of Reclamation.

We had 3 boats out today.  There must have been a bunch of other cancellations because we did not see another boat on the river all day. We gave our friends who fish with us every year the option to reschedule but they decided to tuff it out. The morning wind proved to be a work out but the results paid off.  Acccording to Dan Momber who set up the group trip, it was “another epic fishing trip.”  The amazing Grey Reef fishery combined with hard working professional guides can be awesome even in Wyoming’s windy conditions!  Here at Wyoming Anglers our guides are not looking for excuses to not work hard.  We work hard to make it happen what ever the weather conditions may be!

3-10-14-The purpose for the 2014 Grey Reef Flush on the North Platte River:

The purpose of the fluctuations is to improve trout reproduction in the river, according to Coleman Smith, Wyoming Area Manager. “In the past, spring flushing flows have occurred during five consecutive weekdays. Last spring, the Wyoming Game & Fish requested flows for 10 consecutive days,” Smith said. “However, the flushing flows had to be terminated after seven days due to a loss of generating capacity at Fremont Canyon Powerplant. This spring, the Wyoming Game & Fish again requested flows for 10 consecutive days. The Wyoming Game & Fish will collect data before, during, and after the flushing flow in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the longer duration flush.”

The flushing flows are expected to clean the spawning gravels of fine sediment which has accumulated over the winter. The fluctuations in the river flow will be achieved without loss of power generation and the water released from Alcova Reservoir will be restored downstream in Glendo Reservoir.

We had another fun group of friends fish with us this weekend. The weather was amazing and so was the fishing.  One of our boats counted 50+ fish to the net which isn’t to shabby for a day of early spring fishing!  Top producing flies were natural pine squirrel leeches, grey rs2s, brown mohair leeches, and red rockworms.

I had the pleasure of taking Jake and Anthony fishing today.  What a hoot!  They threw streamers searching for trophy trout most of the morning without much luck.  They nymphed the second half of the day and tore it up. The average fish size was 17 to 20 inches.  We had five double hookups and lots more fish to the net.  And the weather was fantastic!  No wind and no gloves. Luke Keil-Gray Reef fly fishing guide
