The upper Grey Reef is getting pretty weedy but Government bridge to Sechrist seems to be fishing about the best right now.  The moss isn’t too bad and it has the next highest level of water clarity.

Flies of choice: pheasant tails, pmd’s, crawdizzles, red rock worms, foam post Rs2′s, red & purple San Juans.

The upper Grey Reef has recovered from the rain very well and is fishing great!  The lower sections of the Grey Reef are still off color and might take a bit.  As soon as we have clear water and start fishing them again we will give you a report.  Flies are pretty much the same.

Grey Reef Fishing Guides Testimony

I Just returned from four days of fishing on the Grey Reef section of the North Platte river near Casper, Wyoming.  The trip was put together by the guys at Wyoming Anglers.  I was asked by three of my golf buddies if I would arrange a fly fishing trip and decided to contact Wyoming Anglers.  I actually found them on the Internet as I was searching Wyoming fly fishing guides.  I was a little concerned since I had not used their services before but I booked an “all inclusive” trip which included 4 individual rooms at the house they use near the river and three meals a day.  (breakfast and dinner at the house and shore lunch on the river).  The food was plentiful and tasty. Two of the guys that went on the trip had virtually no fly fishing experience and the third guy not only had very limited fly fishing experience but  took his 15 year old grandson who had no experience.  All of us caught many trout some up to 20 inches.  We fished from the traditional “McKinsey” drift boats and caught fish dead drifting nymphs. The guides were great and had an immense amount of patience with my rookie buddies.  My last morning with my guide was one of the most memorable of my fishing days since it was spent virtually hunting rising fish and casting small dry flies to the rising fish.  Although I was rewarded with less than ten fish for the morning each fish landed on a dry fly was worth 10 fish that I caught on a nymph.  I would highly recommend Wyoming Anglers and the Grey Reef section of the North Platte River for your next fishing outing

Rain

Eagle Creek and Blue Creek got some rain. It blew the Reef out momentarily.  Good news is that it usually recovers quickly. We had 6 inches of visibility this morning and 12 inches around 4 pm.  Our guides fished the top of Grey Reef Reservoir were it’s river like.  It was an excellent alternative and it fished very well towards the lower part.  My guess is that Grey Reef section will be much clearer and fishing good to great by Friday and excellent again on Sat.  We will keep you up to date when we hear from our guides.

Don’t forget this is the time to have incredible Trico & Pmd DRY FLY FISHING for the morning for hald a day!!  Read yesterdays report.

Wed August 6th 2013 Grey Reef Dry Fly Fishing

We had an incredible day DRY FLY FISHING today.  We caught fish on the surface all morning until lunch.  Fish were eating tricos and pmds on the surface.  Dave just couldn’t talking about how this was the best day of fishing he can remember.  I told him it was the funnest day of fishing I have had in a long time too!  Ain’t no better way to fish than watching Trout slurp your flies off the surface!!

O ya, and the nymphing is really good too!

Platte River Fly Fishing Guide-Testimony

Fly fishing with Luke was an absolutely amazing experience.  I’m a 25 year woman from Muskogee,  OK. This was my first time to fly fish and I was super nervous. I was scared that our instructor was going to be dry and wouldn’t have the patience for my friend and me. This was not the case at all though.  Luke was more than an instructor for us. He was an instant friend that didn’t seem to mind us being the chatty girls that we are. More than that, he was so helpful! He was very skillful. he changed our flies and indicators several times as the trip progressed. He even taught us how we could continue our new hobby at home, on a less active river. I will definitely be making the drive from Oklahoma to Wyoming again for another fishing adventure with Luke. I would recommend it to anyone.
So this took so long to get to you. I just got back into Oklahoma.  Hope you’re having a wonderful summer!

They finished up shocking the Miracle Mile.  We ran into their boats today but we started early so we werent unlucky enough to fish behind them.  Wow was the fishing rediculous.  They dropped the flows way down so all the Trout were jammed into small runs.  What a fun day with guests Richard and David.

Fishing has been stellar in the morning and afternoon. Large PMD were popping all over the place with bigger PMD patterns fishing all day. Purple rock worms fished very well as well at around 6 ft to an AB. Fished are stacked on the inside seams of faster moving water. Starting as far inside and possible then

moving out seems to be the best tactic by a long shot. Dave and Adrian had twenty doubles and boated around 70 fish today with several at or over the 20″ mark.

As I was heading out to pick up my guests at our lodge, I looked over and realized that the lower sections had cleared up.  I was so used to them being dirty because of all the moisture we had, it caught me by surpise.  I drove down to the Sechrist put in and sure enough it was much clearer.  So I took the Selch group for their last day of their 4 day fishing trip from Sechrist to Government Bridge.  The fishing was very good!  What a breath of fresh air.  Mainly the top 12 miles of the Grey Reef has been clear enough to fish since spring.  So it is very nice to spread boats out.  We only saw one other boat all day.  Red san wons, red rock worms, brown pine squrrell leechs were fly of choice.

Yep you guessed it.  That is Michael again holding a Trout caught on a Stonefly at the Miracle Mile.  When we have guests here for multiple days we give them a taste of all of the good water around Casper.  The Mile is flowing high at around 3500 cfs.  The fishing are gobling stoneflies.  For nymphing a pats rubber legs and a bead headed half back did the trick until around 1 pm then red san wons.

Nothing has changed on the Grey Reef as far as fishing goes.  Well except it’s getting a bit warmer.  But the fishing has been great!  Just ask our friends Michael and Jean Selch who returned again this year.  They decided it’s awesome enough that they needed 4 straight days on our amazing Wyoming waters. There’s a reason that we get people who fish all over, who come here and book multiple days.  Because the fishing cannot be beat! Big fish after fish after fish after fish.

and Bobby doing the same!

Flows have increased to 2500 cubic feet per second, spreading out the number of good areas to fish. Look for in the days to come for more and more trips to take place down from Government Bridge (though the upper portions will fish well all summer).

Today we had the pleasure of entertaining Bobby Craft and some of his friends. Two fished with the guide and three more followed us in a separate boat. Check out some of their catches.

We are booking trips for July as we speak, but still have a few openings. Don’t miss out on an opportunity to take advantage of everything a day on the Reef offers. Call us today at 307 267 5161.

Yes our Grey Reef fishing guides are coming back with EXCELLENT reports.  After pumping the stomachs of a few fish you will find that Pale Morning Dun’s are quickly becoming one of the main food sources for Trout right now.  Also Caddis are popping around much more frequently.  This means dry fly action especially in the afternoons is gonna heat up.  The current water flows have recently been bumped to 800 cfs which has spread more fish out, meaning we have been able to find fish in more spots.  The guides are loving the higher water and are hoping it will increase even more quickly!  Check out our $40 off deal for a half or full day though June 30th.  Check our site regularly for the deals that we often run!  Just mention the report when you book to receive the discount.
